❤️ Why you’ll love it
This simple fajita sauce recipe makes creating delicious, restaurant-style fajitas at home a breeze. In just five minutes, you will have a traditional, zesty sauce that you can use to marinate and season your tofu and veggies or even to give your leftovers from the night before a complete makeover!
You will love making this homemade fajita sauce because, unlike store-bought fajita sauces, you can fully control what goes into it and can customize the flavors and spice levels depending on your personal preferences and tastes (check out the Variations section below for a few flavor ideas). It is also much easier on the pockets than the prepackaged grocery store brands, taking just a handful of staple household ingredients.
Because it takes little effort and just a couple of pieces of equipment, you can whip it up just before dinner. Or, you can quickly make a large batch to have on hand for later in the week!
🧾 Key ingredients
Fajita seasoning – The blend of spices from my homemade fajita seasoning is the base of this recipe. This delicious spice blend uses a variety of dried herbs and spices, including chili powder or chili flakes, sweet smoked paprika powder, garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, oregano, salt, black salt, cayenne pepper, and brown sugar.
Lime juice – The lime juice adds a splash of zest to the sauce. For the best flavor, use freshly squeezed lime juice.
Soy sauce – The soy sauce gives some umami flavor to the sauce and helps balance out the lime juice’s acidity. For a gluten-free option, you can use tahini sauce.
Vegetable oil – The oil helps to give the sauce a rich flavor and texture. You can also use other neutral oils that do not change the flavor, such as olive or avocado oil.
Water – Water helps to thin the consistency of the sauce without changing its flavor. You can also use vegetable stock to add a bit of savory flavor!

👩🍳 Instructions
Making fajita sauce
Whisk all of the ingredients together in a small bowl until well-blended.
💡 Expert tip
When using fajita sauce as a marinade, allow at least half an hour for the flavors to soak in. For the best flavor, let it marinate for at least 6-8 hours but no longer than 24 hours. Always marinate foods in the fridge and let it sit at room temperature for 20-30 minutes before cooking.
🔄 Variations
You can customize your fajita sauce with other citrus flavors and flavor enhancers. Try it with orange or pineapple juice versus lime juice, or add brown sugar or honey to give your sauce a hint of sweetness. You can also swap out the soy sauce for adobo sauce (without the peppers) for a smoky, spicy flavor profile, or add a bit of hot sauce if you like it more spicy.
🥣 Serving ideas
Just because this is a fajita sauce does not mean it cannot go with other things! Of course, you can use this delicious fajita sauce recipe to season my portabello mushroom fajitas, shredded oyster mushroom fajitas, and black bean fajitas.
However, you can also use it in place of the fajita seasoning mix in my sheet pan fajitas veggies and Chipotle copycat fajita veggies recipes to make saucy vegetable fajitas. Or, you can use it as a marinade in my copycat Chipotle veggie burrito bowl, Chipotle sofritas, and Chipotle plant-based chorizo recipes.
You can also serve all the above in this fajita bowl below!
❄️ Storing tips
Store unused sauce in an airtight container or jar for up to two weeks. You can also store the marinade in freezer-safe bags for up to one year. Always discard the fajita sauce after you have used it.
🤔 FAQs
If your fajita sauce is too thin, combine equal parts of cornstarch or arrowroot with water to create a slurry, and then add it to the sauce. Then reheat it in a small saucepan to activate the starch and make it thicker.
You should aim to marinate tofu for at least two hours. For maximum flavor, you can marinate it for up to two days. Check out my 13 flavorful tofu marinade recipes for more ways to marinate your tofu!
Because mushrooms are very porous and retain lots of moisture, they only require 10 minutes or less to soak up the flavor. I do not recommend marinating them for more than 30 minutes. Otherwise, they will be too juicy.
