A hand is holding a large peeled onion and cutting it into slices with a large knife.

If you have ever made fajitas and thought it did not taste right, then the way you sliced the onions may be the reason. Once you learn how to do it the right way, your fajitas will always taste delicious.

Cutting onions into strips balances the crunch and flavor in each bite and allows the onions to work beautifully with all other fajita ingredients. This is a tried and tested technique that I have learned from the pros.

Why is cutting onion important for fajitas?

Cutting onions for fajitas properly makes and breaks how good your dish will taste.

Fajitas are a popular Mexican dish with a mix of flavors, and onions play a key role. Properly cutting onions ensures they cook evenly, releasing their full flavor potential into the dish.

The size and shape of onion pieces also affect the texture of your fajitas. Thinly sliced onions will soften quickly and blend seamlessly, while larger chunks retain some crunch, adding an extra layer of texture.

The way onions are cut can also impact the cooking process. Thin slices cook faster, while thicker slices may take more time. This affects when to add other ingredients to the pan and the success of your fajitas.

Cutting onions is essential in preparing delicious fajitas. It’s not just about chopping an ingredient but understanding how the size and shape of your cut can enhance the flavor and texture of your dish.

How to slice onions for fajitas (step by step)

Cutting onions for fajitas is actually quite simple, once you learn the proper technique. Here’s how to do it step by step:

    STEP 1
Start by peeling the onion, then cut off the top of the onion, leaving the root end intact. This will give you a stable base for cutting.

A hand is holding an onion and peeling it with a knife.

    STEP 2
Next, cut the onion in half from the top to the root. This will give you two halves to work with. Lay one half of the onion flat on your cutting board, with the cut side down.

Half onion is placed on a wooden board. One hand is holding it while the other is cutting slices.

    STEP 3
Now, it is time to make the cuts for your fajitas. Begin by making vertical cuts, slicing from the top of the onion half towards the root, but do not cut all the way through the root. This will hold your onion together as you make the rest of your cuts.

    STEP 5
The number of cuts you make will depend on how thick you want your onion slices to be. If you prefer thinner slices, make more cuts. If you like your onion slices to be a bit thicker, fewer cuts will do.

    STEP 6
Once you have made all your vertical cuts, it is time to slice the onion half horizontally. Again, do not slice all the way through the root. Start at one end and work your way to the other, making sure to keep your slices even.

    STEP 7
Chop the onion by making downward cuts. As you cut down, the previously made slices will fall away, leaving you with perfectly sliced onion for your fajitas. Repeat the process with the other half of the onion.

A wooden cutting board with a knife and red onion slices and halves.

And that is how you perfectly slice onions for fajitas every time.

What is the best onion for fajitas?

When it comes to choosing the best onion for fajitas, the choice often depends on personal preference. However, there are certain types of onions that are more commonly used in fajitas due to their flavor profiles. I recommend using white onions, red onions, or yellow onions.

Tips for how to slice an onion for fajitas

When you are slicing onions for your fajitas, there are a few important points that you must keep in mind:

    • Choose the right onions: White onions are often the best choice for fajitas because they have a sharp and bright flavor that pairs well with the other ingredients. But, as I mentioned above, you can also use yellow or red onions.
    • Cut into thin strips: You need to cut the onion into thin strips. This is because fajitas are usually eaten with hands and large chunks of onion can be difficult to handle. Thin strips of onion will cook evenly and blend well with the other ingredients.
    • Use a sharp knife: Remember, a sharp knife is actually less dangerous than a dull one. This is because a dull blade can require putting more pressure to cut which increases the chances of it slipping.
    • Cut on a stable surface: Make sure to cut the onion on a stable surface. This will help you avoid any accidents and ensure that your onion slices are uniform.
    • Make them even: Cutting even slices is also important so that they cook uniformly. Otherwise, you will have some slices of onions that are overcooked and some that are undercooked. The difference in texture will not be pleasant.

FAQs about cutting onion for fajitas

What kind of onion should I use for fajitas?

For the best flavor in your fajitas, I recommend using white onions. They have a sharp, crisp flavor that pairs well with the other ingredients in fajitas. However, if you are not a fan of strong onion flavor, you can also use yellow onions, which are slightly sweeter and milder.

How can I avoid crying when cutting onions?

There are a few tricks to avoid crying when cutting onions. One method is to chill the onion in the refrigerator before cutting it. The cold reduces the amount of the enzyme that causes the tear-inducing gas. Another trick is to cut the onion under running water or while submerged in a bowl of water. This prevents the gas from reaching your eyes.
